Anderson Silva says fifth round submission over Chael Sonnen was payback for Nogueira brother insults

UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva has revealed his fifth-round submission of Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 last Saturday was a deliberate sign of payback after the latter’s criticism of the Nogueria brothers.

Speaking via Sherdog.com, Silva said:

“I was very upset when he spoke that (expletive) about the Nogueira brothers. He messed with the wrong people. I will kill and die for these two. I promised them that I would submit Sonnen in their honour. For me, it was a matter of honour and thank God everything went right.”

Silva, currently 27-4 MMA, 12-0 UFC, holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under his tutor, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and again said he injured his ribs only days before the fight.

“The doctor told me not to fight, (my manager) Ed Soares, too. The decision to fight was out of respect for my fans and the UFC.”

The Brazilian is still unsure of how long he will have to sit on the sidelines and his coach, Ramon Lemos said yesterday he could be out until early next year.

“The doctor asked me to hold a little, but now I have to go back and he will specify how long it takes for me to recover. I’ll have to go to the doctor again (first). My priority now is to return home to be with my family, take care of this injury and get back to 100 percent for whoever will be my next opponent – Vitor or Sonnen. It’s whatever the UFC decides.”

Silva, who was four rounds down until he pulled off the submission, praised Lemos for guiding him through the critical moment.

“Ramon has been like a guru to me. At the time of the triangle, he yelled for me to hold the arm, take control and that helped me into position.”

Silva came within a whisker of losing his middleweight belt after Sonnen dominated him on the ground. Despite all that, Silva showed the heart of a champion by pulling of an amazing come from behind victory and will now heal his injuries before defending his inseparable title once more.
