Edgar, not Maynard to Face Penn at UFC 112
The question that was troubling the UFC fans recently seems to have an answer now. At least, that’s what UFC President Dana White believes! In a recent interview, Dana White said that he felt Frankie Edgar is the most qualified fighter and better prepared than the undefeated 155 pounder Gray Maynard to challenge the current UFC Lightweight champion B.J. Penn. The Monday bout between Maynard and Nate Diaz was expected to determine the No.1 contender for the Lightweight title; but after Maynard’s split-decision victory at UFC Fight Night 20, White said “The Bully” is perhaps not 100% ready for a title shot against Penn.
A title bout became prominent when Penn recently stated in his official website that he might put his title on the line at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi against an unnamed opponent. A source close to the organization has revealed that a bout agreement in the process of being finalized. White also has made a statement now that Edgar may face Penn in the April 10th event, but nothing has been made finalized yet. Edgar, a native of Toms River, New Jersey is currently having a three match winning streak. In his seven UFC appearances, the only hurdle he couldn’t cross was Maynard himself. But experts believe it is the quality of Edgar’s recent performances that earned him a title shot consideration.
