Born on the 19th of May, 1981, Georges St. Pierre is often referred to as GSP by fans and the media. Georges St. Pierre is a mixed martial art exponent of French-Canadian origin. This current Ultimate Fighting Champion is also celebrated among the world’s best ‘pound for pound’ fighter. Georges St. Pierre is currently considered as the Number 1 welterweight champion and has been ranked by many MMA publications.

Georges St. Pierre has had a very disturbed childhood. He lived in a neighborhood where clothes and money were regularly stolen, leaving him high and dry. It was this emotional beating that egged him on to learning the martial art Kyokushin Karate. The general need was to defend himself as early as seven years. Thereafter, he mastered Jiu Jitsu, a Brazilian martial art and boxing. St-Pierre worked very hard as a youngster, as a bouncer in a night club and also a garbage-man. All this and more to pay his school fees!

Georges St. Pierre trained extensively at the popular Renzo Gracie Academy and earned his brown belt in 2006. St. Pierre also trained in Quebec City and is now with Brazilian Top Team in Montreal. Georges St. Pierre spent quite some time in the Wrestling Club at Montreal and in boxing, in Quebec, at the Grant Brothers Gym. Georges St. Pierre has trained with the likes of Rashad Evans and Keith Jardine at Greg Jackson’s Submission Fighting Academy.

He earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in September, 2008. Fans would be interested to know that their role model is afraid of heights and flying! Georges St. Pierre took part in his first bout at 16 years, beating an opponent of 25, a boxer. The bout was won with a knock out, even though Georges St. Pierre’s skills were poor at the time. St-Pierre defeated Parisyan in his Octagon debut and then later Hieron, with punches – 1:42. After his defeat, at the hand of Hughes, St-Pierre returned to UFC and defeated Miller.

His memorable fight with Frank Trigg saw Pierre control the fight within the first round. Georges St. Pierre defeated B. J. Penn to become the number one contender for the title and won by a split decision. Georges St. Pierre also featured as a trainer on Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter 4. He is loved by fans for the support extended to Canadian MMA fighter Loiseau. However, he lost the welterweight title to Matt Serra, an underdog. Georges St. Pierre blamed the lack of focus on the problems in his personal life.

The best of his skills were seen in 2007, at the UFC 74, where Pierre outwrestled the NCAA wrestling champion Koscheck. This win made him the number one contender for the UFC Welterweight Championship title against Hughes. He won the Interim Welterweight Champion. In 2008, when Serra was unable to stand up to Georges St. Pierre, Pierre was very gracious and requested the crowd to show Serra respect. He has retained his UFC welterweight title opposite Jon Fitch.
