Guaranteed Title Shot to Nogueira vs. Velasquez Winner in UFC 108
The pre announced headliner of UFC 108 must have gained some extra attention as it is now officially confirmed that the winner of that match will become the No. 1 contender. The news must work as an energy booster to Cain Velasquez and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira as it will be a great opportunity for both of them to showcase their potentials. This match will take place on 2nd January, 2009 and the winner will have his chance to meet the winner of UFC Heavyweight Championship match between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.
The current headliner of UFC 108 is a result of a series of incidents. The main event of UFC 108 was happened to be a championship match between the champion Lesnar and the challenger Carwin. These two superstars were earlier planned to main event the UFC 106. But that didn’t happen due to the champ’s ill health as he was suffering from mononucleosis. This time, Carwin has confirmed in his blog that the expected UFC 108 date is also scratched. This compelled the authority to book the Nogueira vs. Velasquez match as the UFC 108 main event. There was perhaps no other option as the tickets had already gone on sale to the general public this week.
Nevertheless, the fight is worthy to be a main event in its own merit. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira’s (32-5-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) only loss in UFC was against Frank Mir in December 2008. Cain Velasquez (7-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC), on the other hand, is considered as on the game’s top prospects who is yet to taste defeat in the octagon. Some extra attraction, however, is being added to it by declaring the match as the decider of No.1 contender. UFC president Dana White said in an interview that both the fighters are in top form and they are the future of the company’s heavyweight division. The match will go the normal three rounds.
