Josh Thomson’s next match
As we all know, Josh Thomson is the Strikeforce lightweight champion. He will soon face the person he had wrestled the coveted title from namely Gilbert Melendez. This match is going to be a five-round rematch that is to be held at the Strikeforce “Shamrock vs. Diaz” on 11th of April 2009 and is going to be held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The Director of Communications for Strikeforce Mr. Mike Afromowitz has confirmed this particular matchup to Sherdog.com on Tuesday. This bout was initially reported to be a possibility by FiveOuncesofPain.com on Monday. The five-round shutout by Thomson over Melendez in a match held last June is considered to be one of the high points of the illustrious career of Josh. It was reported that the American Kickboxing Academy product had established its confidence with the Pride Bushido star earlier and had actively used several lateral movements to keep Melendez at the bay all throughout the 25 minutes of the match. This match loss was however marked only to be the second loss of the fighter’s career and this match also duly solidified what many actually suspected of Thomson’s potential in the lightweight division of UFC. Thomson had made a quick work out of an overmatched Ashe Bowman in the non-title bout in a match that was held in last September and he thus simply had cut down the Lion’s Den prospect in a matter of only 74 seconds at Strikeforce’s second event that was held at the Playboy Mansion. He was later reported to have said to Sherdog.com that he had mixed feeling about his rematch with Melendez.
