The Four Machine-Guard Categories, Explained Simply

In machine safety, an introductory classification identifies four guard categories: fixed, interlocked, adjustable, and self-adjusting. A machine guard is a barrier or protective device intended to prevent an operator from contacting hazardous machine parts. The categories differ according to whether the barrier stays in place, interacts with machine operation, is repositioned manually, or moves in response to incoming material, as summarized by this third-party educational source.

Here, “guards” means machine-safety barriers—not security personnel or guard positions in combat sports.

The short answer: four types of machine guards

The four categories are:

  • Fixed: remains a barrier between the worker and the hazardous machine area.

How each machine guard works

Fixed guards

A fixed guard remains a physical barrier during routine machine operation. Unlike the other categories, its defining action does not involve being opened as part of normal operation, reset for different work sizes, or displaced by incoming material.

“Fixed” describes the guard’s relationship to the hazardous area. The term alone does not establish how a particular guard must be attached, removed, serviced, inspected, or maintained.

Interlocked guards

An interlocked guard is linked to machine operation. Under this basic definition, opening or removing the guard causes the machine to stop or prevents hazardous operation while access is available.

No conclusion about stopping performance or suitability should be drawn from the category name alone.

Adjustable guards

An adjustable guard has an opening that a person can reposition to accommodate differently sized materials or parts. The operator or another person makes the adjustment rather than the incoming material moving the guard automatically.

Its defining feature is therefore manual repositioning. The term does not indicate how the adjustment should be made or whether a particular setting adequately addresses a given hazard.

Self-adjusting guards

A self-adjusting guard changes position as material enters the operating area. The material’s size and shape determine how far the guard moves while the item passes through.

The movement is caused by the incoming material, distinguishing this category from a guard that someone must reset manually. This description concerns operation only; it does not establish the effectiveness or suitability of a particular design.

Adjustable vs. self-adjusting guards

The simplest distinction is:

To tell them apart, ask what changes the opening:

  • If a person resets it when the material or part size changes, it is adjustable.
  • If the material changes the guard’s position as it enters, it is self-adjusting.
